Setup Guide Part 5 Wing Settings
Workout a setup for Spain Catalunya Circuit

Hi guys,

sorry for the little break as I was under water a little bit.
I found a very nice video on youtube which shows the power of wing settings.

Now lets go on with the wings. I think the most of you have an understanding about more front-/rearwing equals more front-/rear downforce and results in higher corner speeds. With more rear wing you can avoid oversteering and with more Front Wing the Understeering.
You should always remember that wings only work over lets say 80 mph. So if you need more grip in slow corners you can't get it out of the wings. In slow corners you have to get the grip out of the springs and alignment settings (mechanical vs. aerodynamic grip).
On every circuit you will go with more wings in qualifying than in races. The reason is the drs you can use in qualy all the time. In general you will also have more rear wing in qualifying due to this fact.
As we are working out our setup for catalunya lets have look to this circuit. We have a lot of long mid/high speed corners, so its clear to set high downforce. The tradeoff is that that we loose highspeed on the two long straights. In qualifying that doesn't matter so best setting is 11-11. In the race it does matter and you should choose 10/10 or even lower to be able to overtake. When you have the pole position you can go with 11/11 but you must gain a gap in the first round already to the 2nd man behind you.
I added a little video footage out of the last F1 season where you can see that issue in monza. Perhaps you remember that hamilton was a lot of faster than schumacher but had to high wings (which is good for one free round but not for overtaking).
Last thing to mention is that most people like to drive with more rear wing than front wing so for example 10/11 or 9/11 and so on. But be careful with that because most times it only counteracts a weak alignment or balance ;-)

Next time we go on with the Alignment Settings.
Keep racing
